The Somewhat long-winded story of The Chief’s Moon Bunting…

In the winter, I made a very limited number of these great little phases of the moon buntings for my lady friends. i just thought it was a cute idea. I had seen different versions, done in a bunch of different materials with fabric and paper and such. I found a lovely, high quality black paper that somehow mimics watercolor paper, and went to town. I had made a few extra, so I sold those at the Junction Flea, and they went over very well with people and we got some requests from people with baby rooms to decorate, or wanted them cause they were having a moon-themed party (genius!), but mostly people were just requesting them because they needed a perfect little gift, or to decorate their own kitchen, bathroom or bedroom (these look great hanging above the bed, you know)

Well, as many of you know, I have been working at a manic pace to try and get this humble little series of bunting finished. We were aiming for early May….and now its early June. So i’ll bet a few of you are curious, “What ever happened to that idea?”

Look no further for answers, because I have all the answers you seek! The short form of the answer is: MOON BUNTING WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE SHOP THIS SATURDAY AT 11AM!! Just in time for the Dundas West Fest!

In Slightly longer form though, we would like to thank all of you for your beautiful support and interest in these little pieces of art. They are hand-painted, hand-strung, numbered and signed. Numbers 1-50 will be available on Saturday, we are very proud to announce. And any extras we have left over will be accompanying us to the Junction Flea this upcoming Sunday.

We will be open a little longer on Saturday, so you’ll have lot’s of time to come claim your very own set!

Dearest children of The Chief,

Sometimes mommies have to go on road trips to gather new treasures for you. But it’s not because mommy doesn’t love you. Mommy doesn’t want to leave, but sometimes she has to, so that you can have pretty new things. You want pretty new things, don’t you?

What i’m trying to say is that I am goin on a lil road trip for the week to gather some amazing finds for you! Please note our shop hours will be a tad irregular for the next few days…

How wonderful are all of you for coming out last night in support of Vintage Crawl Toronto? How much fun was that?? By all accounts, very fun!! And the reviews have been rolling in from all of our buddies who also stayed open well into the evening that a great time was had by all. Well worth the sleepiness I’m experiencing today!

A huge thank you to Odessa for spear-heading the effort to make the first Vintage Crawl of the year as wonderful as it could be, and a very, very big thank you to Noah Earle of Able Design for making all the promo material so perfect. You guys are wonderful.

Can’t wait for Vintage Crawl, the Fall edition!

In the meantime, please come see us for the first OUTDOOR JUNCTION FLEA of the season this SUNDAY THE 12th! I have been waiting months for this. We will be slinging our usual selection of treasures, deals, and the iced tea stand will be in full-effect. With a few sweet treats and surprises in store as well.

We just came back from Texas! Granted, it was 2 parts vacation, 1 part picking trip, but we still brought back many beautiful little treasures for you guys. Skulls with antlers, bones, coral, barnacles, great knives, and other various items that I’m grateful to have gotten through airport security with!

And we are also very excited about participating Vintage Crawl Toronto, happening this very Thursday…which is fast approaching!

We will be offering complementary delicious treats and spritzers, a twoonie bar for beer, not to mention solid deals off EVERYTHING in the WHOLE STORE!! That’s right, even all the new treats we brought back from Texas. We shall unveil the deals a day or two before the Crawl, but I assure you, they will be epic.

We are also very proud to announce that Friends Electric will be joining us for Vintage Crawl. Doing a pop up here at the shop, and just generally being awesome.

Can’t wait to see you guys. Seriously. It’s been too long.

Someone just told me that if Aleister Crowley had a gift shop, it would be The Chief. Pretty much the best compliment I have received. Made my week.

In unrelated news, please note that The Chief will be closing an hour early today and on friday. Not because we don’t love you, but because we have to. Normal hours resume on Saturday and Sunday.

Yes, we have been absentee bloggers over the past…ummm, couple of months. yes, yes, I know. We’re sorry, and we miss you guys!! I make this promise to you now that we shall be stepping up our blogging game, especially with all the exciting new developments we are going to have to share with you over the Spring and Summer!
It’s going to be a wild one.

First of all, finally got those 1920’s Cat Show ribbons framed like I had been saying I was going to for months. That’s the beautiful thing about the transition to a new season. Gets you all fired up to take on the projects you had been lazily dragging your ass on through the cold winter months.

Also, make sure you come and see us this weekend at the shop to see/smell/touch all the beautiful new things we have for you, AND come see us at The Junction Flea this Sunday at The Great Hall (Queen and Dovercourt)! Its the last centrally located Junction Flea of the season, in May the Flea moves back to its home in the Junction, so when you’re strolling down Queen street on Sunday morning, be sure to come pay us a visit!
And last time there were these vegan jackfruit ‘pulled pork’ tacos which blew my mind.

Here are a few ideas to give to that special person in your life. Ranging from really affordable to just a little more fancy, depending on how serious you are about the big V-day…..Some of things photographed below are good examples of what is in the shop and will maybe take off some of the pressure of what to get. We have a beautiful crafting/sewing case that folds up neatly and has lots of little spots to store tiny things. Another idea is picking up one of the custom scents created by Province Apothecary & The Chief Salvage (it will go over well trust me), a pretty bracelet or ring would make a nice addition too. In the last photo is a glass display case, which would be lovely for storing sweet little treasures or memories.

What Idle No More means to me.

I’m a white woman. Furthermore, i’m a white woman who has grown up in a world full of possibility and privilege. Although it is something I have never taken for granted, I have been raised with an acute awareness of this fact, even a guilt you might say. Since I was very little, my father has used his status to do good work with organizations who are immersed in the development of the third world. For 25 years he has done what he can to learn and use his voice to evoke positive change when and where he can. He uses his gifts to write about them, and he uses his name to promote them. For this, I am exceedingly proud. When looking at the the most pressing issues of third world development, the one thing that has always occurred to me since I was old enough to understand, and occurs to me still, is choice.
We have choices. So many others do not.

And when that occurs to me in regards to people who live 7000 miles away, I can’t help but immediately turn inward, to our own community, our own nation, our own pollicies, and wonder if everyone is in the same boat that I am. Full of choices. Freedom. Possibilities.
The answer, if you are looking towards North America’s aboriginal peoples and their struggle, is sadly not. We have created our own little third world situation for them right here in our very own country. The rate of unemployment, depression, poverty and suicide amongst our aboriginal people is heart-breakingly high, and because of this, their culture is suffering. Or perhaps they are suffering, because their cultural identity is suffering,

Its a culture that I, and so many others, owe a incalculable debt to artistically, spiritually and environmentally, yet we leave it widely unacknowledged. Policies are altered and shifted behind the greater aborigianal communities back. Keeping the elders in the dark, robbing those we have promised to aid and work with of their ability to take care of themselves, and therefore robbing them of a voice within our community. A community that is so indebted to them.

It has happened in the past where I have been questioned about the name of my shop here in Toronto, The Chief Salvage Company. And while the title is not actually a direct reference to the Native community, I have often been asked about whether or not it is, and I find myself welcoming this conversation. I’m glad this is something that is on people’s minds. That some people are mindful enough about the cultural appropriation of Native imagery and language, that it even occurs to them to ask. That its on people’s cultural radar means that perhaps the quiet whisper of this issue is becoming more of a yell. Most people operate under the false assumption that Canada was a colonial power, and that colonialism is a long-gone, antiquated concept…and that is simply not true. The Canadian government exercises its sovereignty over the Aboriginal nations of this country regularly, and as a reminder we have Chief Theresa Spence as a figurehead.

There are so many people out there saying what I have just said, and more eloquently, and it makes me proud. Fills me with a sense of hope about what could potentially come of the Idle No More movement.

here’s one that really gets at some of the core issues in a way that is relatable.

At the beginning of this article there are also direct links to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples which concisely breaks down their findings and recommendations, and is massively helpful in trying to get a better grasp on the issues.

Just a few days till the big Vintage Crawl, happening this TUESDAY NIGHT! Needless to say, we are very excited to see your beautiful faces, serve you a lil bit of cider, get you a little bit tipsy, and give you some great deals!
